Think what you want on the concept of “New Year’s Resolutions“, but to be given the opportunity or point to be able to reflect, review and change is always a good idea.
As parents, choosing to lead by example is the first rule that we all must abide by.
So before we all start blaming everyone else for the slow degradation of our society’s values and respect … let’s benefit from this new year and follow these very simple resolutions:
Resolution no.1: Standing in line
No one “likes” to wait or stand in line… No one has the sane desire or fantasy to stand in line and just wait.
But the concept of waiting your turn at the bank, supermarket or anywhere else is a sign of RESPECT.
Respect for the many other people who have arrived before you and just like you have things to do, deadlines and lot’s of more important things than to wait for their turn to finally come.
So can you imagine if we all made the conscious decision this year to wait our turns in line without cutting what would happen? Can you imagine what an amazing example you would be to your children or for others.
I have met a lot of parents complaining that in schools kids are pushing and shoving each other at the school cantines and cafeterias. Yes, it is the school’s responsibility to teach them and have organized behavior on their premises… but it is our duty as parents to instill this when we are with them.
You can witness sometimes parents cutting their kids in lines at amusement centers so that there Kids can go first … what example are they giving?
RESOLUTION NO. 2: Don’t text and drive
Be with or against the traffic laws, the corrupt police system in your country, but bottom line it’s dangerous to whatsapp or message or Talk while driving.
How many of us have been stuck behind someone driving erratically then when you pass them it’s because they are talking or texting … don’t you think that they are actually thinking that it’s not affecting their driving?
Don’t you think that when you text and drive you are doing the same dangerous driving methods?
Can you imagine driving in a country with everyone actually paying attention to the road? Change starts with you.
A teacher in my son’s school was killed last year on the school grounds because the mom was texting and backing up her car in the parking …
If you really must talk install a Bluetooth or Car kit or Wear Earphones… but be a better example to society and your children and wait to make that call…
You may not get a ticket from the policeman that looks the other way but be a better citizen and be the change.
RESOLUTION NO. 3: STOP NAGGING! CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY
If you’re not happy do something about it. But for this new year you wake up in the morning and CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY the whole world around you will start to change.
I left a 14 year career, because I realized that I was in a job that didn’t make me happy. My very simple advice is to really organize and see the specific thing in your life that is keeping you negative, down and angry and CHANGE.
But don’t submit your resignations or file for divorce or pack your things and leave the country just yet… take your time and make sure that this is the reason first. Don’t be afraid to get advice or talk to more than one person. Don’t even be afraid to seek help from a therapist or healer.
Before getting out of bed each morning, SMILE and start your day … try it you have nothing to lose…
RESOLUTION NO. 4: Keep an open mind, don’t judge, DON’T GOSSIP
This is a vague resolution… but is it?
No matter what your religion, race or even what political party you follow … in the end we are all passing through almost the same thing. “Almost” because do you really know what the other person is going through, his past and present?
Make an effort this year to take a step back and look at the big picture. Sometimes people’s actions are a silent cry for help … try to be the better person before getting into any “conflict” and see the other full story before you judge.
RESOLUTION NO. 5: READ
About 50% of people who have clicked on this post are not actually reading the full article just the BOLD TITLES … so if you are reading the small print… CONGRATS! 🙂
But seriously, there are so many benefits of reading on your brain and stress levels … and as this post is about resolutions on how to make society better … MAKE AN EFFORT TO READ MORE THIS YEAR and your FACEBOOK and TWITTER news-feeds don’t count.
Find the time. Get a good book. READ.
Some great books can really stimulate and inspire you to do more and see more… try it …
