Growing up in Cairo blessed me with an amazing childhood.
When you live in a country you get to feel and experience what happens “behind the scenes” than just visiting as a tourist for a few days. And with part of my family still in Cairo, I get to visit and love this beautiful and busy city often.
The Red sea destinations are also a must when planning a family vacation, but make sure to include a few days in Cairo. So here is my top places and tips you have to check out on your next visit:
Essentials that we all know are:
- Egyptian Museum (start early there is a lot to see!)
- Visit the Pyramids of Giza, the mighty Sphinx and a sunset horse or camel ride around them are A MUST.
- Khan el Khalili the most beautiful bazaar in the heart of the city is best in the evening (or late afternoon) once it’s a bit cooler – bargaining for your souvenirs is part of the experience.
- Dinner on one of the many boats cruises on the RIVER NILE is the best way to see the Beauty of Cairo at night, away from the traffic and busy streets.

But now, my TRAVEL TIPS favorite places that not many tourists get to experience:
How to get around town –
ZAMALEK – 26th. July street and all the streets branching out from it
Time to walk. You can only truly experience a country by walking in its streets among its people.
Side Note: Cairo is a conservative country, so be respectful by the way you dress… keep the short shorts at home … you will enjoy your walk a lot more that way!
I love Zamalek. My school and home where here so it will always be very special to me.
I buy all my souvenirs and gifts from the street shops especially:
Home & Beyond – Authentic gifts with a modern twist for the home. Good quality and good prices!
ALTAY – on the same street you will find this shop. Jewelry from necklaces, bracelets and ear rings, in addition to a few home accessories and also very reasonable prices and good quality.
Turath: for the best scarves, table cloths and other hand-made crafts – this is a shop not to be missed.
TIME TO EAT
After walking you will have worked up an appetite so here are a few food options:
ZOOBA: in the center of 26th July street – Zooba gives you a real taste to Egyptian street food with a few twists.
BURGER FACTORY – some delicious burger combinations that are worth a try!
GRIZZLY – located in Club 33 – located on the river Nile left bank. So in addition to good food you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the river and heart of the city.
SEQUOIA – dinner in this beautiful restaurant on the Nile is an experience that you have to try when in Cairo. Just the perfect place after a busy day in the city… relax and enjoy and let the serene view take your breath away …
So make sure to visit all the history and heritage of Cairo – but also make time for the MODERN Cairo and WALK Among its people to really understand what this beautiful city is all about!
